A Candidate For A Killing (69) - John Richardson, Margaret Lee, Anita Ekberg, Fernando Rey, directed by Sydney Pink. Nick Warfield (John Richardson) is a down on his luck speedboat racer. He winds up in Nice, France after a racing accident. While staying at a hotel, he meets a girl named Kina Lund (Margaret, and this is one of the few movies that has her real voice) when his luggage is delivered to her by mistake and she takes a liking to him. He receives an invitation to a party from a wealthy man named Mr. August (Fernando Rey). Turns out Nick looks just like a businessman named Jarvis, and Mr. August wants to hire Nick to impersonate him. He takes him up on the offer and is sent on different stops around the world. Anita Ekberg is sent to accompany him on the trip, but soon he wonders what he got himself into when people start trying to kill him! Luckily, he finds Kina and turns to her for help. (B+) Bang! Bang! You're Dead aka Our Man In Marrakesh (66) - Tony Randall, Senta Berger, Margaret Lee, Klaus Kinski, Terry-Thomas. Excellent cast in this Spy/Comedy. After traveling to Morocco, businessman Andrew Jessel (Randall) finds himself caught between spies and gangsters after discovering a body in his hotel closet. (B-) Covert Action (78) - David Janssen, Maurizio Merli, Arthur Kennedy, Corinne Clery, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, Philippe Leroy, Ivan Rassimov, Giovanni Cianfriglia. Janssen plays a espionage writer in Greece who has the C.I.A. after him because they believe he holds top secret information. Letterboxed. (B) Danger!! Death Ray (67) - Gordon Scott, Maureen Delphy, Max Dean, Silvia Solar. Entertaining and humorous, this movie is probably best known for being shown on Mystery Science Theater. The inventor of a 'death ray' is kidnapped by a syndicate of villians and secret agent Bart Fargo (Gordon Scott) is sent in to rescue him. Sure the special effects consist of a plastic toy submarine and helicopter, but that just adds to the enjoyment! (B- has some slight twitches)
Date For A Murder (67) - George Ardisson, Ella Karin, Mario Brega. This has more of a somber Thriller style than the funnier 'gadget' style Spy movies. George Ardisson investigates the disappearance of his friend and finds himself on the run from a syndicate of bad guys. (A-B+) The Destructors (68) - Richard Egan, Patricia Owens, Joan Blackman, Michael Ansara, Khigh Dhiegh, John Ericson. Dan Street (Egan) must foil a plot by Chinese operatives to steal a laser that is powered by rubies. (C+) Dick Smart 2.007 (67) - Richard Wyler, Margaret Lee, directed by Franco Prosperi. This one probably gets the award for the wackiest Spy movie (that's a compliment!). The story goes like this: Atomic bomb components are being hijacked from different countries. Lady Lister (Margaret Lee) is the mastermind behind it. She has a device called an 'Atomic Reducer' that converts carbon into diamonds (hence the reason for needing atomic components). Lady Lister has several scientists working for her as well as a partner named McDiamond. McDiamond is quite the eccentric character, he always wears a robe and shades, and has a neck brace/electronic voice box he speaks through. He also has a talking computer/robot that he plays chess with! Ex-agent for hire Dick Smart is convinced to take on the case for his fee of one million dollars (he just gambled away his villa to a friend so he needed the cash anyway). Dick takes off for Brazil, taking with him his custom Vespa that converts into a mini helicopter/mini submarine (hey Dick, that's smart!). Once there, he starts his investigation and gets into several melees, including one where he gives a henchman a shot to the gut with a sword (hey Dick, that smarts!). There's even more off the wall stuff packed into it, a nice mix of action and humor. Very entertaining and a nice change of pace role for Margaret Lee. (C+) The Fantastic Argoman (67) - Roger Browne, Dominique Boschero, Eduardo Fajardo, Tom Felleghy, Andrea Bosic, directed by Sergio Greco. Very cool superhero movie with Roger Browne as Argoman. When he's not at his high tech swinging bachelor pad (with Eduardo Fajardo as his Indian butler!) entertaining the ladies, he's righting wrongs with his super powers. After warming up by stealing some royal jewels and pulling a bank heist, super criminal Jenabelle has a plan to control the world. Argoman is called into action to foil her evil plot! Of course Jenabelle has a cool underground lair, an army of bad guys to do her bidding, and even a giant robot! This movie is crazy stylish and funny, can't recommend it enough. Slightly letterboxed. (B-) Five Golden Dragons (67) - Robert Cummings, Christopher Lee, Margaret Lee, Klaus Kinski, Maria Rohm, Dan Duryea, Brian Donlevy, George Raft. While vacationing in Hong Kong, a man accidentally becomes involved with a highly secretive organization of gold traffickers. Letterbox. (B-) The Great Diamond Robbery aka Master Stroke (67) - Richard Harrison, Margaret Lee, Adolfo Celi, Eduardo Fajardo, George Eastman, directed by Michele Lupo. Richard Harrison plays Arthur Lang, an actor who is hired by the wealthy Mr. Bernard (Celi) to pull off a diamond heist in England. Lang is an ideal candidate for the job because he is a look alike of a bank exec named Mr. Owen and can learn to impersonate him. He also was arrested for a robbery when he was younger, and he needs the money so he agrees to do it. The gang kidnaps Mr. Owen while on his way to the bank, sends in Lang in his place, and the heist begins. (A) Hot Diamonds In Cold Blood (67) - Richard Harrison, Rosalba Neri, Diana Lorys, Luis Davila. After millions of dollars worth of diamonds are stolen, smooth secret agent Steve Norton (the great Richard Harrison) is dispatched to solve the crime. Very well done and an awesome cast (Rosalba & Diana in the same movie!) makes this one stand out. (B+) Killer Likes Candy (68) - Kerwin Mathews, Marilu Tolo, Gordon Mitchell. A secret agent is put in charge of protecting foreign royalty from a candy eating assassin. (B) Lightning Bolt (66) - Anthony Eisley, Diana Lorys, Folco Lulli, directed by Antonio Margheriti. Agent Harry Sennet goes undercover to stop an evil villain who is shooting down U.S. rockets with lasers. Lots of silliness and gadgets. Said evil villain freezes his enemies and keeps them in a huge storage container! His henchmen all look like Diabolik too. (A-) Lucky The Inscrutable (67) - Ray Danton, Rosalba Neri, Beba Loncar, directed by Jess Franco. Cool comic book style Spy Comedy with Ray Danton as secret agent Lucky. Lucky gets sent on a mission to stop a counterfeiting ring. Along the way he runs afoul of a strict Albanian interrogator played by Rosalba Neri (who actually takes a liking to Lucky!). Funny and off beat, check it out if you like your Spy movies with humor. Slightly letterboxed. Dean Jones plays a scientist working in Italy who receives a bottle of invisibility potion from India. He accidentally drinks it and uses his 'super invisibility' to investigate some industrial espionage going on in his company involving some mobsters. Plenty of wackiness in this one (including a model airplane standing in for the real thing!). (B) Murder For Sale (68) - John Gavin, Rosalba Neri, Margaret Lee, George Eastman, Curd Jurgens, Luciana Paluzzi. Secret Agent OSS 117 must stop a political assassination plot! Excellent cast! () Operation Double 007 ( 67) - Neil Connery, Daniela Bianchi, Adolfo Celi, Agata Flori, Lois Maxwell, Anthony Dawson, directed by Alberto De Martino. Sean Connery's little brother Neil plays Dr. Neil Connery, a plastic surgeon/hypnosis expert/secret agent/brother to Britain's most famous spy! She plays a dancer named Amalia (she does a little dance routine) and Gordon enlists her help do some spying for him! Letterboxed. (B+) Pumaman (80) - Donald Pleasence, Walter George Alton, Sydne Rome, Miguel Angel Fuentes, directed by Alberto De Martino. Mild mannered Professor Tony Farms discovers he is really The Pumaman, one in a long line of chosen superheroes. Since he is new at the superhero thing, he kind of bumbles through the usual superhero stuff (like flying) and ends up losing the antient mask he was put in charge of protecting to the evil Kobras (Donald Pleasence). The mask can control minds so of course Kobras wants it so he can put his evil plot into action and rule the world. Granger plays a time tested agent brought in by the Americans to help defeat a spy ring. (B) Secret Agent Super Dragon (66) - Ray Danton, Marisa Mell, Margaret Lee. See Super Dragon shut them down using his Karate and breath holding skills, while overwhelming the ladies with his suaveness. (B) Somebody's Stolen Our Russian Spy (68) - Tom Adams, Diana Lorys, Victor Israel, Tim Barrett, Barta Barri. After Russian diplomat Yevtushenko is kidnapped, British Secret Service agent Charles Vine is sent on a mission to rescue him. Letterboxed. (C+ has a few small twitches in the beginning) Spy Connection aka Notturno (83) - Tony Musante, Maurizio Merli, Claudio Cassinelli, Al Cliver. Ken Wood is masked wrestler/superhero Superargo! When an evil genius kidnaps athletes and turns them into an army of robots, Superargo is called in to help. After the accidental death of Superargo's friend and opponent El Tigre during a match, Superargo takes a leave from wrestling. Superargo's girlfriend Lidia (Monica Randall with blonde hair!) convinces him to speak to his old military commander who is now working for the Secret Service. He needs Superargo's help to stop evil mastermind Diabolicus' plot, and Superargo agrees to take the assignment. Diabolicus is hijacking Uranium and Mercury shipments at sea, and has found a way to convert the elements into gold at his secret island lair. Very entertaining! Letterboxed, bar at bottom. Three superheroes (Martin, Harris, & Borgese) are sent on a mission in the jungle to stop the Russians from taking over an area full of uranium. Not long after arriving, they get themselves captured by queen of the jungle Jungla (Femi Benussi!), and her group of amazon women. It's done in a silly comic book style and is pretty entertaining. (B-C+) Supersonic Man (79) - Michael Coby, Cameron Mitchell, Richard Yesteran, Diana Polakov, Frank Brana, directed by Juan Piquer Simon. Galactic Superhero Supersonic is dispatched to Earth to battle the evil Dr. Gulik (Cameron Mitchell) after he hijacks radioactive materials and kidnaps a professor in a scheme to rule the world. Entertaining special effects including models, Dr. Gulik's robot (armed with rockets that launch off his head!), and the famous wooden steamroller. Awesome. (B-) Target Goldseven (66) - Tony Russel, Erika Blanc, Conrado San Martin. Ok, evil mastermind with island lair: Check. Giant laser: Check. Army of henchmen: Check. Secret agent Alan Milner is sent to investigate. He meets up with Portuguese Secret Service agent Luis who uses a nightclub as his front. In one funny scene, they find themselves in a car chase with one of the bad guys. As they are trailing behind, Milner says to Luis, you don't think you can catch him in this car?! Luis says, I can with this special carburetor! He flips a switch, fire comes out of the exhaust, and the car takes off like it has a big block on nitrous! And Erika, she plays love interest 'Erika' of course.
